The Google Time Concept Smartwatch
I’ve been interested in the idea of a smartwatch ever since the concept first started becoming popular, but as of now have yet to find a device that I felt would actually work for me. Of the current options, all are too expensive for the features they provide, and each has its own drawback that has made me put off even giving one a try for a short time. While the concept that you see above is about as far from becoming reality as it gets.
The entire Google-based smartwatch concept was made by UI designer Adrian Maciburko, who actually made up a fairly complete set of UI elements and interactions. All of the UI elements are based off of existing Google products as well, making the entire device look like a perfect match for an Android smartphone. The concept includes quite a few different displays on two different sized smartwatches as well, and even includes gesture and navigation ideas.
This theoretical watch has a sort of Google Now view, and could potentially show some active cards on the square version. It also has features for messages, calendar events, Google+, and weather, which is all standard smartwatch fare. However, the the way it is presented on the concept smartwatch is so clean and looks so sensible that it is something that I would readily use. Whereas so far smartwatch software has always struck me as at least a little bit awkward, this concept makes the watch look perfectly natural to use, and quite elegant at that.
Obviously, part of the allure of this design is that it is presented on a nearly impossibly thin watch with an almost nonexistent bezel, which is something that I realize will have to be sacrificed for battery power, a good display, and Bluetooth connectivity. Still, I like this concept software quite a lot, and think that if applied to existing smartwatch hardware, it would make such devices much more appealing. Of course, that probably won’t happen any time soon as I’m sure there are complications I have no idea about in converting this art into software, but we can always hope. For now, I’ll be looking at current smartwatch offerings, and trying to decide whether I would prefer the square or circular version of the “Google Time” smartwatch if it ever does get released.

AT&T Offers $100 Credit Towards HSPA+ Nexus 7
AT&T is giving a $100 credit to anyone who buys an ASUS Nexus 7 and signs up for service with the carrier.
Rumor is Google will announce a new Nexus tablet at Google I/O, a mere four months away.
Second, you have to sign up for a two-year contract with AT&T. Don’t get me wrong – AT&T’s HSPA+ coverage is decent, and speeds are great. But with a tablet as awesome as the Nexus 7, you’ll want at least 3GB/month of data, and that will cost you $30/month. So, you’ll still end up paying $300 for the 3G version of the tablet, you’ll get just over 3 months of free service from AT&T, and then you’ll be stuck paying $30/month for 21 more months – a grand total of $920, plus taxes and fees. If you choose to get a measly 250MB/month instead, you’ll still end up spending $560 total, plus you’ll always be hesitant to use 3G data due to the ever-present constant risk of inadvertent overages.
LG Denies Nexus 4 Supply Issues
Buying a Nexus 4 from the Google Play store has been nearly impossible since the device first launched in early November. A while back, Google described the supply of Nexus 4 handsets from LG as “scarce and erratic,” but an LG company official spoke with South Korean newspaper, Chosun Ilbo, to set the record straight.
The LG official claims the “Nexus 4 has been produced without a hitch” and that “there is no problem in supply.” This leads us to believe that Google simply underestimated demand for the Nexus 4. The LG official also commented on the recent rumors that LG has halted Nexus 4 production to “focus on the development of its future offerings” saying that they were completely “unfounded.”
For now, it’s impossible to know if or when Google and LG will resolve the supply issues which have plagued the Nexus 4. If you’re still hoping to get your hands on the Nexus 4, your best bet will most likely be your local T-Mobile store.

Samsung Still Fighting A Potential Sales Ban On Its Galaxy Smartphones
A three-judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals blocked Apple’s request in October to ban sales of Samsung’s Galaxy line of smartphones. Since then, the company has asked the nine active Federal Circuit judges to reconsider their decision, while Samsung has urged the appeals court to stand by its pretrial ruling. Reuters reported on Monday that Samsung argued in a recent court filing that Apple did not have enough evidence to show a “causal nexus” between its patented technology and iPhone sales to warrant a sales ban against the Galaxy Nexus. The company went on to state that because the Federal Circuit’s panel already ruled against Apple with “well established” reasoning, the iPhone maker should not be allowed to seek another injunction. The two companies are scheduled to face off in another major patent trial in March 2014, at which point a majority of the devices in question will be outdated.
Apple’s Alleged Massive iPhone 5 Order Cuts
The Sunday evening Wall Street Journal article claiming that Apple had cut its iPhone 5 display orders drastically for the March quarter made quite a splash. The way WSJ wrote its piece seemed to support the original Nikkei claim about Apple cutting its iPhone 5 display orders in half from the originally planned order of 65 million units. This would be a massive adjustment. But Apple uses the same new display type for both iPhone 5 and the latest iPod touch. Neither WSJ nor Nikkei addressed this, however both seem to be referring to just iPhone 5 displays.
The latest estimates for iPhone sales during the Christmas quarter average around 52 million units. Let’s assume (charitably) the iPhone 5 portion of this may be anything from 30 to 40 million. In the seasonally soft March quarter, iPhone 5 unit sales might be 25 to 35 million units. Sales of the latest iPod touch tend to drop by 50% from the Christmas quarter to the March quarter, but could add 4 million units to the total number of devices equipped with 4-inch Retina displays Apple sells in the quarter.
So if the most likely number of 4-inch screens Apple is reasonably expected to sell in March quarter is around 30 to 40 million units, why did Nikkei publish a report stating that Apple had halved its display orders for the quarter from 65 million units? Nikkei was quite specific with the 65 million number. And it clearly tied it to iPhone 5 component orders, not total iPhone or iPhone 5 and iPod touch orders.
In what world did Apple expect to order components for 65 million iPhone 5 handsets in the seasonally soft March quarter?
Perhaps the weirdness of the math is why the current version of the WSJ article no longer cites the 65 million unit figure. Sometime between Sunday at 8:00 p.m. EST and Monday at 7:00 a.m., the Journal decided to drop the number from its article. But if the 65 million number is not right, is the estimate for halving March orders correct, either?
ASUS Announced $150 MeMo Pad For April Launch
ASUS has announce their latest Android tablet. The 7-inch MeMO Pad looks to make a splash in the low-cost, mid-sized tablet department. While it isn’t quite as spec’d out as that other ASUS-made 7-inch tablet, the MeMO Pad costs a whole $50 less.

The Story Of Google Now, Start To Finish
Google Now is a product/platform that really excites us. We can't say for sure that it will live up to the potential, but if it can, it could be something pretty special in the new field of intelligent push. Of course, Google didn't build this product alone, there was a long, strange journey to get here. Where Siri was a product that had an identity when Apple bought it and reimagined it for iOS, Google Now has been something of a Frankenstein monster pieced together from a number of products some built in-house, some acquired, and some built by personnel hired specifically for the job.
There is a bit of an argument about this whole process, with some claiming that Google Now is better than Siri because it was built "from the ground up" by Google, whereas Apple just bought Siri. It's all a silly argument based on geek pride, but it did get us looking into the process by which these products came to be what they are.

Of course, what these products are is something of a trouble spot as well, because people insist on pulling both under the heading of "personal assistant", and trying to compare them as similar. Such comparisons fall flat for us because "personal assistant" is too general a heading. A bike and a jet are both "transportation devices", but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to compare them. In this case, Siri is a tool for finding information and organizing your life, which is based on active participation. Google Now is a tool not only for finding info and organizing your life, but more importantly it is a platform which will passively learn your behavior and interests in order to have relevant information ready for you, without the need for actively searching. Sure, there is overlap in what these two products do, but that doesn't mean comparisons are necessary, or even useful.

The problem is that at some point, an acquired product can't be attributed to the original creators anymore, even when the original creator comes along in the acquisition. The prime example for us is Android itself. Android was created by the Android team headed by Andy Rubin, then acquired as a fully functioning product by Google. Andy and the team still work for Google, but Android has become a wholly Google product. Similarly, Siri was bought by Apple as a fully functioning product, but to say that was the same app that now anthropomorphizes the iPhone just isn't correct.

Some of the functionality had to be removed from the app when Apple bought it, because Apple wasn't going to use services like Bing, Yahoo, or Google for search results, but in place of that functionality, Siri got deep integration into iOS, meaning options for scheduling, reminders, calling/messaging contacts, playing music, and dictation. As Siri matures, it is gaining back some of the partnerships that Apple ditched, but gaining more valuable partnerships along the way. Although key partnerships with services like OpenTable and MovieTickets are still missing, Yelp and Wikipedia are in the iOS version of Siri, and the biggest addition is in the partnership with Wolfram Alpha as a big knowledge base.
The point is that for better or worse, Siri is nowhere near the same app that it was when Apple purchased it. Sure, the backbone of voice recognition powered by Nuance is still at the center of Siri, but what the app can do has changed dramatically. Where Apple has partnered with Nuance and its Dragon software for the speech recognition behind Siri, Google has taken the last 5 years to build its own speech database. That project began with the hiring of Mike Cohen in 2007. Cohen was actually a co-founder of Nuance. He spearheaded the Google initiative to build a speech recognition database, which began collecting data through GOOG-411 in 2007 the free place information service Google once ran before getting a ton of data through dictation and voice actions on Android over the past 2 years or so, not to mention contributions from Google Voice and its terrible voicemail transcriptions. Cohen left Google earlier this year, but the speech recognition work will go on.
On the other side of the voice coin, Google also needed a nice voice to respond to users just like Siri does. Luckily, Google had purchased Phonetic Arts back in December of 2010. That purchase was originally made to make robo-voices sound better in Google Translate, as well as the accessibility text-to-speech option found in Android. These results have shown up in the Knowledge Graph block to the right of standard results.

The information side of Google Now is pretty strange to follow, but the learning side of the platform is actually pretty easy, because it uses two things that Google has been cultivating for a long time now: web history and location services. Web history encompasses both your search history, and any visited pages from those search results, where location services is obviously looking at where you spend your time and where you travel. If you have an Android phone with location services enabled, Google probably already knows where you live and where you work, and all of that data can easily be found on your Latitude dashboard note: this is all private data that only you can see, Google doesn't share it. When you combine that location data with your personal calendar, and Google's ever expanding navigation options for driving, public transport, walking, and biking, you get a pretty powerful data set that only needs a bit of a nudge to predict what information you may need at a given time and place.
Conclusion
We can't say that Google Now was completely built in-house by Google any more than Apple built Siri in-house. Both took very different development paths because of the nature of the product, the nature of the respective companies, and the resources available to each company. Google is a software company that has been working hard for years to learn who you are as an abstract entity, not as an individual, while Apple doesn't have that information to leverage and had to build a product that can essentially start to harvest that data. As we said before, we fully expect Siri to continue its transformation, and eventually become an intelligent push service like Google Now, but whatever the end point, the journey of Siri becoming a fully realized product is much cleaner than Google Now. Apple has always tended to work from a centralized format, creating one singular product designed for a purpose within the larger whole of the Apple ecosystem, while Google is a far more messy affair.
Google captures various services and products for a number of different reasons, and may not always have an overarching plan to bring everything together. Since Larry Page has stepped into the CEO office, that has begun to change, but it can still be a pretty long and windy road leading from products, acquisitions, and hires into a cohesive platform like Google Now.

Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 Coming To AT&T For $200
AT&T on Friday announced the addition of the Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 to its line of tablet PCs. The 7-inch slate is equipped with a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, 3G connectivity and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The IdeaTab A2107 also includes a 3-megapixel rear camera, a microSD slot, a front-facing camera and a 3550 mAh battery. The tablet’s display isn't nearly as good as the competition, however, sporting a mere 1024 x 600 resolution with a pixel density of 170 pixels per inch, falling short of Google’s similarly priced Nexus 7.
“The Lenovo IdeaTab is a great option for those in the market for a compact, multifunctional tablet at an affordable price,” said Chris Penrose, senior vice president of emerging devices at AT&T. “Connecting it to the AT&T network keeps customers connected while on the go to what matters most.”
The IdeaTab A2107 is available now for $200 without a two-year agreement or $100 on contract.

Motorola Killing Off Webtop
Motorola has confirmed that it will no longer be pursuing its webtop program in the future. Famously announced to much fanfare with the Motorola Atrix, the laptop dock is going away. Starting with its latest release of devices -- the Photon Q, Droid RAZR HD, etc. -- webtop will no longer be preloaded and laptop dock devices will no longer be for sale. In an official statement, Motorola laid out the news:
"Motorola's Webtop app helps users extend their smartphone experience to larger screens. While consumers around the world have adopted Webtop and the concept spurred a lot of innovation in the industry, the adoption has not been strong enough to justify continued resources being allocated to developing Webtop on future devices. We have also seen development of the Android operating system focus on the inclusion of more desktoplike features. Beginning with Photon Q and Droid Razr M/Droid Razr HD/Droid Razr Maxx HD, we will no longer be including Webtop on our products moving forward."
This probably doesn't come as a surprise to many of us who have either completely forgotten that webtop existed or saw with the high prices and anemic sales that the future wasn't bright for the product. Most importantly, this really symbolizes the end of an era for Motorola. Webtop may have been one of the biggest things left that symbolized the Motorola of the past. As if Google and Motorola's statements prior to its latest device launches weren't clear enough, it seems as though we're looking at a "new Motorola" going forward.
