Facebook Finalizes WhatsApp Acquisition

Facebook today closed its acquisition of WhatsApp. Announced earlier this year, is valued at $19 billion. U.S. regulators approved the proposal in April, but it did not receive approval from the European Commission until last week.

As part of the deal, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum joined Facebook's board of directors who will be granted $1.9 billion in stock if he remains with the company for four years.

WhatsApp is a cross-platform messaging service that many use an alternative to traditional, carrier-based SMS services.

Microsoft Reportedly Working On Windows 9 OS

Microsoft is currently planning to use the Windows 9 branding and vision as a way to move away from some of the criticisms of the Windows 8 operating system. It’s not clear what type of changes will be made to Windows 9 with Metro 2.0, inside the new OS will reportedly include a major focus on improving Microsoft’s new app world and tiles. Previous rumors have suggested Microsoft is planning to separate out its Windows 8 style apps to allow them to float and run in separate windows on the traditional desktop.

Microsoft will reportedly use three major milestone development points for Windows 9, but it’s not clear how many of them will be released to the public during the development period. The software maker is currently in the final planning stages for Windows 9 and work is expected to begin after the Build 2014 developer conference in April. It sounds like Microsoft will use Build 2014 as a launch point for its vision of Windows 9, detailing some of the planned changes in an attempt to generate excitement around the company’s future plans.

Nokia Camera Beta App Now Available

The Nokia Camera application debuted earlier this year as a combination of two of Nokia's previous apps, Pro Cam and Smart Cam, giving Windows Phone users access to more imaging modes and video features than the standard Windows Phone camera app offers. However, the app has only been available to Nokia devices with PureView-branded cameras since its debut. That's changing today, as a new Nokia Camera beta app has been announced for other Lumia models.
The new Nokia Camera beta app is being offered as part of the Nokia Beta Labs program. The app is meant to be available to all Lumia models running Windows Phone 8 and features the same look and feature set as the standard Nokia Camera app. That'll change over time, though, as Nokia intends on adding new features to the app to test them out before they're pushed to the stable version of the Nokia Camera app that's available through the Windows Phone store.

LG Dumps Windows Phone To Focus On Android

Microsoft and Nokia might be making a big push for Windows Phone in the United States, but other OEMs haven’t been quite so active as of late. LG was one of the original launch partners, and the company has now said it has no plans to introduce any new Windows Phones onto the market. LG will instead focus its efforts on Android, as said during its earnings call last week.
While LG say it will “continue research and development efforts” for Windows Phone, the company won’t be making any new handsets in the immediate future. A spokesperson for LG further alluded to poor sales, saying that “the total unit of Windows Phone sold in the global market is not a meaningful figure.”
LG has been losing money over the past few quarters, and only recently began turning a profit in Q1 2012 after refocusing efforts on its best performing products. Sales still declined, but the higher margins on products helped the company turn a profit. It makes sense then that the company would want to focus on its more successful products, and if Windows Phone isn’t delivering big numbers it stands to reason that LG would cut it from their portfolio.
Meanwhile, Steve Ballmer is said to be visiting Seoul for one day in order to meet with the chief of LG Electronics. While Microsoft and LG both have no records of a set meeting, the timing comes after LG’s last earnings conference call where an executive reaffirmed the commitment to Android following recent strong sales of LTE handsets, and said the company would be taking a step back from Windows Phone.

Skype For Windows Phone Sheds Beta Title

Skype for Windows Phone sheds beta title, graduates to v1.0
Skype's fledgling Windows Phone app broke out of beta today, adding contact searching and landline calling to it's VOIP repertoire. The update comes just shy of two months of the Beta's introduction in February, and boasts a handful of minor improvements that should keep your calls connected. You'll still be making those calls yourself, however, as the full version doesn't yet have support for receiving calls in the background -- if the app isn't running, your phone isn't ringing. Hit the source link below to update.

HTC Trophy Software Update Now Available

Trophy users have begun receiving notifications alerting them to the fact that the update is available, and once that notification hits users will need to plug their handset into their computer and upgrade to the new software using the Zune (Windows) or Windows Phone 7 Connector (Mac) clients. The Trophy may be the only Windows Phone available on Verizon, but it's good to see that at least Big Red is keeping its sole WP7 handset up to date. This new update, which is software version 2305.13.20402.605, is definitely one that Trophy owners will want to load onto their handsets, if only to gain the fix for that pesky bug that can cause the software keyboard to disappear.

AT&T Lumia 900 Owners Reportedly Suffering From Data Issues

Nokia’s Lumia 900 is currently AT&T’s flagship “hero” device but new owners are already expressing concerns over the phone’s ability to maintain a data connection. Reportedly, the phone has had trouble staying connected to HSPA and LTE data networks, so users aren’t able to surf the web or download any data. AT&T is reportedly telling Lumia 900 owners to pull their SIM card, restart the phone or even perform a master reset — all things you don’t regularly expect to have to do with a new phone. The good news is that several users have reported that at least one of those steps helped solve the problem.

Angry Birds Space Won't Land On Windows Phone

Peter Vesterbacka, chief marketing officer, at Rovio has told Bloomberg that there are no plans to release the latest iteration of the popular time sink on Microsoft's mobile platform. Despite the original game still being the most popular app in the Marketplace, Vesterbacka claims that "...it's a big undertaking to support it, and you have to completely rewrite the application." So, until a Series 40 version is confirmed, you bird slingin' Nokia fans will just have to wait. The news will be a disappointment to Windows Phone users, I’m sure. But I doubt it will be enough to convince you to switch platforms. If it is, it’s possible your Angry Birds addiction is getting out of control and we’d advise you to seek professional help.

Update: It seems as if Mr. Vesterbacka misspoke, or his comments were taken our of context. Rovio's CEO, Mikael Hed, told Reuters that "we are working towards getting Angry Birds Space to WP7," though there is no time frame set for the release yet.

Nokia Lumia 900 Pre-Orders Start In Canada

The Nokia Lumia 900 is the first Nokia Windows Phone device designed specifically with the North American customer in mind meaning it packs a relatively large 4.3-inch display and offers 4G LTE connectivity. While Nokia’s main goal is to make itself known in the USA, the Lumia 900 is first coming to Canada.

Just as Canadian carrier Rogers promised, the Lumia 900 went up for pre-order today for a price of only $99.99 on contract. In Canada, Rogers requires you to sign up for a three-year contract in order for you to fully benefit from the carrier subsidy. Additionally, the first ones to pre-order may qualify for a Nokia prize pack which could be a Batman-styled handset and other bundles.

Rumor has it that AT&T stateside will launch the Nokia Lumia 900 with the same sweet price of only $99.99 on a 2-year contract.

The handset features a 4.3” WVGA screen, 1.4GHz single-core processor, 16 gigs of non-expandable internal memory, an 8-megapixel camera and an 1830mAh battery.

Nokia has indicated via a FAQ posted to its web site that its Lumia Windows Phone devices will be updated with support for the mobile hotspot feature. The Lumia 800 and 710, which are already available in some markets, do not include this feature. According to Nokia, the feature will be added in a future system update, though the timing and availability of the update was not provided. The Lumia 900 and Lumia 610 will support mobile hotspot at launch. If the tethering capabilities on the update are the same as what the Nokia Lumia 610 and Nokia Lumia 900 are sporting out of the box, users will be able to hook up as many as 5 devices at one time.
